| abstract painting
Ref: A1272 |
| John Lowry is a professional painter and gallery owner |
| Abstraction is not limited to any one medium, or to subject matter, it’s a mental approach to all things creative. It involves the imagination and a fresh outlook on the world. It’s an exciting opposite to ‘just copying what’s there’, yet the rules of composition, colour relationships, visual rhythm and so on that we all know about are exactly the same. After this course your approach to art will be very different. We will produce a portfolio of at least one painting to be proud of, each day, mainly working in the studio. Any medium, an open mind and a sense of humour! |

| AFTER MATISSE AND CEZANNE ~ pastel and paint into Still Life
Ref: A1278 |
| Patrick Oates is a figurative fine artist and art historian with many years’ experience in Higher Education |
| To develop an understanding of the quiet effects of light, shade, colour and texture in Still Life pastel painting, we will explore the works of Matisse and Cezanne. By working systematically through the skills of observation, and experimenting with the subtle techniques of pastel and gouache, we will invoke a better personal working practice. This course is a superb opportunity to develop traditional Still Life themes in a highly original but expressive way within a structured series of exercises, with Patrick introducing both contemporary and traditional ways of working. This course is very suitable for beginners. |

Ref: A1283 |
| Mike Fennell is a professional artist and tutor who exhibits his work throughout the UK |

All colour mediums are suitable though it is important that you are familiar with the medium you choose. Some experience of painting and drawing the nude is essential. |

| PASTEL PAINTING
Ref: A1292 |
| Graham Oliver owns a gallery specialising in pastel paintings and has exhibited with the Pastel Society |
| This course is for beginners and those with more experience. We will be working in the studio, and the grounds of Higham Hall, from landscape and still life subjects, designed to teach particular skills. The elements of successful picture making will be evaluated including composition, colour, tone and mark making and the tutor will give demonstrations and lots of individual attention to illustrate these. Pastel is a remarkably generous medium because the colours are premixed, and corrections can easily be made to find the best solution. |

| LANDSCAPES OF RIVER AND HILL ~ THE DERWENT IN AUTUMN
Ref: A1296 |
| Lionel Playford is professional landscape painter with many years’ experience teaching art |
| The Lake District offers many a picturesque view of a river framed by dramatic or melodic fells, but can you create a painting that betters the tourist brochure cliché? The answer lies in looking afresh at the landscape by making a series of sketches on location and transforming these into a painting with feeling and originality back in the studio. Lionel will offer guidance in composition, colour and technique to help you achieve this lofty aim and to steer you away from some of the pitfalls of the picturesque. Open to all levels of ability in the medium of your choice. |
