| THE MEDIEVAL CATHEDRALS OF ENGLAND
|
Ref: A1306 |
| Valerie Marshall is an enthusiastic architectural historian and photographer |
 |
| For almost 500 years England gloried in the building of its twenty-six medieval cathedrals. This is an introductory course tracing, with the extensive use of slides, the architectural development which occurred and the reasons behind the changes. Gloucester is our starting point with its imposing pillars in the nave and we then concentrate on Durham, Wells, Ely and Exeter to illustrate the gradual development in style, which culminated in the remarkable fan vaulting of the cloisters in Gloucester. |

| BREAK THE RULES WITH PASTEL - AND CREATE EVOCATIVE LANDSCAPES
|
Ref: A1311 |
| Patrick Oates is a figurative fine artist and art historian with many years’ experience in Higher Education |
 |
| Pastel is historically renowned for the subtlety and delicacy of its working properties, yet much myth is attached to it. In reality, pastel is a medium that is just a form of dry use watercolour. Patrick demystifies the technique and explains all by breaking the rules and inventing a few of his own! But don’t be dismayed. These light-hearted workshops are scholarly in delivery and intent, with exciting slide illustrated talks to stimulate debate. Beginners and advanced artists will thrive on this course, and be delighted at the satisfaction achieved in the pictures that are made. |

|
Ref: A1378 |
| Lionel Playford is a professional landscape painter with many years’ experience teaching art |

| Walking through beautiful landscapes in different lights and weathers can inspire strong emotions in many. On this course we will engage with various ideas about abstract painting to open the mind to more powerful and exciting responses to nature based on the experience of two field trips. Then in the studio we will explore, using materials of your choice, some of the vast range of possibilities offered by abstract art inspired by examples of the last 100 years of abstract art. |
Ref: A1392 |
| Patrick Oates is a figurative fine artist and art historian with many years’ experience in Higher Education |

| The correct use of perspective in landscape painting can be a huge cause of anxiety to artists of all experiences, yet a true working knowledge readily explained can be a revelation. Rowland Hilder was a wonderful exponent and succeeded in combining rural landscapes with a real nostalgia of earlier 20th century England. With evening slideshows of Hilder’s and other renowned paintings, Patrick explains and demonstrates the practicalities of one or two point perspective by giving you the mechanisms and working framework to compose your pictures, and get it right every time. Patient group and individual guidance is designed to give all artists unforgettable pathways in the own development. |
