*NEW* The tempestuous times of the late Stuart monarchy: Charles II was a secret Catholic, James II an open Catholic, William III a Calvinist and only Queen Anne was a loyal Anglican. The Church of England was restored but a large group of Nonconformists were expelled and persecuted until toleration in 1689. Hoping for a Catholic monarchy, many joined the Jacobite cause.
