EXPLORING MODERN ART ON LOCATION: EXILES IN AMBLESIDE

September 4th at 18:30 to September 6th at 13:30

Elizabeth combines lectures and a day trip to locations associated with the less familiar history of modern art in Cumbria. This time she focuses on Ambleside and Langdale in the 1930s & 40s, where the Royal College of Art were evacuated to. A wartime retreat for artists and intellectuals emerged, and exiled German artist Kurt Schwitters spent his final years making his last great and unfinished work on the site of an old gunpowder store. Some free time to explore, sketch and photograph the Lake District landscapes that inspired these artists, lunch at a local venue and a visit to the Armitt Museum. For fans of twentieth-century art and social history, with a bit of rambling (including some off-road) with options for a range of abilities – suitable footwear essential and dress for the climate!
