This month we highlight visiting art Tutor Ben Haslam. A working artist with his own substantial gallery in Hexham to manage, we are fortunate to be able to drag him westwards and slightly south to Higham, but he is well worth it!

Ben has vast experience at persuading people they CAN paint if they want to.  His 2 day courses here at Higham are ideal for those ready for the challenge to do it properly and to leave feeling they are real artists.

Even Ben’s chosen subject for his upcoming course ‘Mountains & Reflections’ aims to treat students as artists from the very start. Being “from scratch”, this course can be an opportunity to flex a brush, as it were for the first time or even once again, perhaps taking on board fresh approaches of both an experienced Tutor and a real artist. Everything you need is included in a kit as well.

At Higham, we look out onto an enviable vista stretching from Binsey across Uldale fells to Skiddaw and Ullock Pike – a ready-made artist’s view. Reflections can be seen in all manner of ways, and in this neck of the woods, as our photographers have found, even a rain puddle can be an opportunity for artistic behaviour, let alone a lake or river.

Higham’s spectrum of Art Tutors cover all levels of ability, preference and media, from those wanting the straight forward through to the real thinkers and expressionists. Mr Haslam covers the core skills necessary for good art with a solid grounding in technique so that students can feel proud of what they have achieved.
