Edward Thomas died a hundred years ago at the battle of Arras, and the Great War was one of the things which made him a poet. Yet he was never 'a war poet'. During the afternoon we shall read and explore those poems of his which came out of the conflict but which, with every decade that passes, seem to grow more universal in their meaning and importance. In 1928, now sixty-two and a senator of the Irish Free State, W.B.Yeats published 'The Tower'. This is by common consent his greatest collection of poetry, containing some of the finest utterances of the twentieth century. It will be the main focus of the weekend, and we shall relate it to Yeats's life, his beliefs, his work in the theatre, and the momentous times through which he lived.
