Debbie Rumney –  (Furniture Restoration: reseating)

  • Chair Reseater, trained by her father (retired Higham Tutor) David Bowen, and Sandra Cotterell from Sedbergh
  • runs ‘Reet Neat Seats’ in Carlisle

Reseating courses at Higham offer people the chance to revive old pieces of furniture, which often will then outlast many modern pieces.  However, the techniques in using traditional natural materials cane, rush, seagrass or Danish cord are just as relevant as they always have been.  As an alternative to upholstery, woven chair seats and backs, done properly, are long lasting, environmentally friendly and hygienic as well as looking good, without adding huge amounts of extra weight.
