Philip Gruar (Recorders and Early Music)

  • based in S. Cumbria, Specialist Early music recorder tutor.
  • with several ‘strings to his bow’, Philip Is actually one of just a few Northumbrian pipe makers – these are similar to bagpipes, but bellowed.
Philip’s sessions at our Early Music Summer Schools have proved so popular that he now offers another opportunity for recorder players to enjoy developing their playing in a small workshop. Often, by sheer genius of planning, co-inciding with a Viol workshop (run by his wife, Elizabeth Dodd), there is now an opportunity for a bit of unique cross-fertilisation, players of different instruments in consort, etc.

An opportunity for recorder players to enjoy a weekend of mostly one-to-a-part consort playing, in anything from four to twelve parts, and to discover some possibly unfamiliar music. Mainly Renaissance, but we may extend into some 20th century music too. (Coincides with the Viol Weekend, so we are planning for some interplay!)
