| CREATIVE KNITTING ~ VICTORIAN TWIST
Ref: C1254 |
| Ruth Lee is a professional knitwear designer, fibre artist, published author and experienced lecturer |
| Gloves are making a comeback from small handcoverings to long armlets and wrist cuffs. Learn how to knit this essential accessory designed with a contemporary twist, combined with a touch of period drama. The aim of the course is to produce a collection of how-to-do-it samples, developed to the point where you are able to complete a project with a Victorian twist at your own leisure. Glove-knitting can look complicated to the inexperienced knitter, but they can be knitted on either two needles or in the round on double-pointed kneedles – so don’t worry! All you need to take full advantage of this course is to be able to cast on and off, do knit and purl stitch and have an open mind to the possibilities. |

| THE BORDER REIVERS
Ref: H1253 |
| David Brandon is a social history writer and experienced university tutor |
| The old counties of Selkirk, Roxburgh, Berwick and the Cheviot Hills are still lonely, bleak and ill-frequented. Several centuries ago they were the scene of gang warfare, where gangs of wild, ruthless men pillaged and robbed the poor or engaged in vendettas against other gangs while the authorities looked on impotently, unable to intervene. This course looks at the Border Reivers and their world. Combining time at Higham with a visit to places of relevant interest, this course should appeal to those who enjoy unusual aspects of history and are fascinated by the mysterious appeal of the beautiful Border counties. Among places to be visited is Hermitage Castle – was there ever a more sinister castle in the whole of Britain? |
