Places To Visit and Walks Near Higham

Places our students and guests tend to visit include:

Within 5 minutes drive:

• Bassenthwaite Lake Station (Cafe)
  Simon and Diane Parum have restored the buildings of the old station, closed by Beeching in 1966, and now run a rather special cafe. If you are lucky, you can even enjoy refreshment aborad a lifesize replica of the Orient Express!
• Dubwath Silver Meadows Wetland Nature Reserve
  Opposite the Station cafe is a circular boardwalk (no more than 1 mile in total) through preserved wetlands (which still act as an ooccasional flood plain for Bassenthwaite Lake).
• The Pheasant Inn
  Open again under new management, just a stone’s throw on from SIlver Meadows, an historic coaching inn with a rather special little bar harking back to ye olden days.
• Lakes Distillery
  Down the hill on the way to Ouse Bridge. They make their own Malt, Gin and Vodka.

Within 10 minutes drive:

• Thornthwaite Gallery & Teashop
  Highly recommended, under new ownership this special place has a very interesting and well-curated collection of art and craft for sale, as well as doing a great cuppa!
• Walks: Elva Plain, Sale Fell, Ling Fell, Bassenthwaite Lake (Ouse Bridge)

Within 20 minutes drive:

Cockermouth

• Wordsworth House, Castlegate House Gallery, Banks Heritage Museum,  etc.
• Cash Points: Castlegate Surgery, Allison & Son Chemist,
• Useful shops include:
  Cockermouth Arts & Crafts, 10% discount for Higham Hall students and tutors!
  Billy Bowman’s Music Shop
  and lots of decent little cafes…
  Oh, and we get our tyres fixed at Goodfellows on Sainsbury’s car park.

Keswick

• Cash Points, Theatre by the Lake, Keswick Museum & Gallery 
• Numerous cafes, outdoor shops, even some clothes shops and Booth’s supermarket.
• Derwentwater Jetties, Hope Park, Friar’s Cragg etc.
• Walks: Derwentwater, Binsey Fell, Newlands Valley, Cat Bells, Castlerigg Stone Circle, Borrowdale, Skiddaw, Dodd Wood Osprey Viewing Point, St Bega’s Church, Lingholm (wallked garden & cafe)

Within 30 minutes drive:

• Mae’s Tearooms and Gallery (Uldale)
  Set in the former school building at Uldale – with a selection of art on the walls.
  The pleasant villages of Caldbeck (home of the Woolclip), Heskett Newmarket (home of the eponymous brewery we get our grog from).

Within 40 minutes drive:

• Walks: Loweswater, Crummock Water, Buttermere, Newlands Pass, Honister Pass, Grange, The Bowderstone

Higham Hall Walks Book

We have a full colour Walks from Higham book, professionally written by Ronald Turnbul, containing 12 local forays from Higham with full route descriptions and OS Map sections.

This excellent showcase for our wonderful locality is paperback A5 landscape (same as our brochure) and a lovely full printed colour copy is for sale from the Office for £5, with all proceeds going to Higham.
