JOBS AT HIGHAM
We are a 7 day-a-week organisation, currently employing about 30 regular Staff plus freelance tutors.
In additon we have one or two Volunteers, both regular and occaisonal, who help us in the gardens, with decoration or driving for courses.
We take being a place of work seriously, and we value our staff, regardless of age. It is our pleasure to be a part of people’s lives, whatever their stage of life. We regard it as an honour to provide paid work for young people just starting on their professional journey, and, equally, to be a support to older adults for whom doing something worthwhile that makes a difference matters, and everyone in-between.
Working at Higham, in any capacity, we want you to feel like one of our little family. Thank you for taking an interest.

JOB VACANCY
Tuesday Evening Bar Steward and Overnight Duty Manager required
1 night per week, between 5.30pm to 8am
A 5-hour bar and hospitality shift plus on-call sleepover, one night a week (Tuesdays).
Salary: bar shift £11.82/hr + sleepover flat fee £40.
Higham Hall is seeking a conscientious and practical individual to join our bar team within our independent adult residential college. The right candidate will be trustworthy and able to provide a pleasant and reassuring customer experience for our guests and tutors. We have a small residents-only bar. Duties include welcoming guests and standard bar duties before and after dinner, operating a till and dishwasher, ensuring the bar is kept tidy, well stocked, and all glasses are clean and ready for the next day. During dinner, you will support the service staff in the dining room, take drinks orders and help guests as needed. Excellent communication and customer service skills are essential.
The sleepover is not a waking shift. Higham is a residential college and we have students staying on site 350 nights a year. You will stay in the ensuite staff accommodation provided and be on call in case of emergencies overnight. You will be the sole member of staff on site, on hand to assist residents should they need anything. You will ensure that security and fire safety procedures and protocols are followed and be prepared to deal calmly with any problems that may arise, from internet issues to calling an ambulance if a guest becomes ill. You will report any incidents or important information arising from your shift to office colleagues at the morning handover. Full training to the appropriate levels in fire safety, first aid and food hygiene will be provided.
Own transport is essential as Higham is located 3 miles outside of Cockermouth.

Volunteer Gardeners
Always wanted to join a very small team of volunteers helping our Head Gardener care for our modest 6 acres of grounds. The gardens are well-established and have paths, interesting trees and open spaces that are enjoyed by our adult Students and Tutors. It’s often worth it just for the open view of the Skiddaw fells we are so lucky to have.
Whether it be for just an hour occasionally or more frequently, there is always something to do throughout the year. Just make an appointment to come in and see Neil, our head gardener.
All volunteers are able to be fed & watered, and are treated as valuable members of the Higham Team as well!
Volunteer Drivers
We have two vehicles in use:
-
- Fiat Panda 4×4 car (called ‘Noddy’) for transporting 3 adult students from/to mainline railway stations.
This service enables people to use public transport to get to Higham. The run to Penrith takes 3o minutes each way, Carlisle just a little longer. - Ford Transit 13 passenger minibus (called ‘Finlay’) for taking educational groups of adult Student with Tutors on Field Trips
- Fiat Panda 4×4 car (called ‘Noddy’) for transporting 3 adult students from/to mainline railway stations.
Typical destinations include Buttermere, Borrowdale, St Bees and Newlands Valley, Eden Valley, Hadrian’s Wall to name a few!
We do not often travel outside Cumbria.
Course groups are always Tutor led and can be anything including themes of Geology, History, Art, Gardens etc. on half or full days out. Sometimes drop-off, sometimes maybe enjoying what the group are doing.
Driving duties can include:
-
- drop-off and pick-up for groups or individuals (to/from Penrith Station)
- half days out with course groups and Tutors
- full days out with course groups and Tutors (lunch provided)
- multiple days out with course groups and Tutors (lunch provided)
Even being available once in a while can help.
Having volunteer drivers helps us enormously as it often relieves a Tutor or a member of staff from having to drive.
Requirements:
-
- Full Driving Licence:
– for minibus: if obtained before 1997, your licence qualifies you to drive our minibus, otherwise you need a separate Minibus Licence
– for car: a regular licence is all that is required - doctor’s clearance (if required, for instance if over 70)
- 25-75 yrs old
- proven safe driver (no major offences on your licence)
- Driver Awareness Training may be offered
- Full Driving Licence:
All volunteers are able to be fed & watered, might get a chance to experience part of a course, and are treated as valuable members of the Higham Team!
