Support our roof appeal: Higham’s roof is in urgent need of repair. We need to secure loose ridge tiles and replace broken slates. We need to replace the lead valleys around the building which have been the source of persistent leaks over the years. Wet rot has been found on several roof timbers and we are now in a race to prevent the damage from spreading. Thanks to the generosity of many of you, we have raised an amazing £30,000 so far. This enabled us to make a start on the most pressing issues. We plan to tackle the rest of the work in stages as and when funds allow. Please help us complete the works by 2028 – the 200th anniversary of the year Higham was built.
£35 will pay for one roof tile; £80 will pay for one metre of lead.
Support our bursaries and assisted places scheme: Help us provide financial support to students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to come and learn at Higham. Do you have a particular passion for something? Consider supporting a bursary for students to study a specific subject such as music or endangered crafts.
Since 2012, the Friends of Higham have funded 51 one-off bursaries (70% discount on fees) and over 250 assisted places.
Support the garden: Higham’s garden is a peaceful refuge for both students and wildlife, and a rich source of creative inspiration and educational opportunities. Help us with the upkeep of our 6 acres of woodland, wetland, meadow and formal gardens for the benefit of all. £35 will buy 20kg of high energy sunflower hearts to feed the birds that come to eat and nest at Higham. £350 will cover the cost of materials to replace one square metre of the boardwalk around the pond, or plant 1,000 spring flowering bulbs – a rich source of nectar for emerging insects – along the driveway.
Support our programme: Sponsor a lecture, masterclass or support courses in specific subjects, such as music or endangered crafts. In addition to thoughtfully expanding and enhancing our courses, we would like to be able to offer peer development and residency opportunities for artists, writers, performers and craftspeople to spend focused time on developing their creative practice at Higham.
Support our future plan: We have ambitious plans to ensure Higham remains a place that nurtures creativity, curiosity and wellbeing for generations to come. Our vision for the future involves a programme of capital works across the site to:
– protect and preserve our historic home which provides the beautiful and unique setting for the college.
– improve access to enable more people to move freely and safely about our buildings and gardens.
– invest in our site, facilities and residential accommodation to allow sustainable long-term growth which will help us meet demand (28% of our courses have been over-subscribed in the last 5 years).
