This practical introduction to the art of calligraphy will focus on the calligraphic styles used by scribes from the 8th century to produce, for example, the Lindisfarne Gospels, the Book of Kells and Lichfield Gospels. These magnificent books were created by isolated religious communities where, although influenced by various overseas cultures, their individual styles flourished. We will start with some close looking and discussion of the work then use these historical references to write the calligraphic uncial and half-uncial hands. We will learn from the artistic techniques used to create the intricate Celtic knotwork and decoration, and combine with our calligraphy to produce a final piece of work to admire. New tutor Christine is an experienced professional calligrapher of international standing who has taught calligraphy for many years.
