The lecture will examine the military role of Cumbria and the impact on the County of the First World War, which began as a small conflict and became a national effort involving the whole population. It will include various aspects such as The Border Regiment and other local military units; recruiting; local industries and their contribution to the war effort, especially munitions; railways, transport & logistics; agriculture, food production and rationing; the role of women in all aspects of war work; local and Red Cross convalescent hospitals; prisoners-of-war; media coverage; local casualties and Remembrance.
