Morris, his close friends and fellow designers inspired the Arts and Crafts movement. Though much associated with the south of England, this introductory course will examine their activities in the Lakes. Aristocratic benefactors, friendships and creative co-operation produced work in painting, architecture and the decorative arts that can be seen in their original settings. We will discuss, consider and examine chronology, changes in style and specific examples of work in different media. Morris’ belief in values of natural beauty, craftsmanship, education and individualism in the face of industrialisation, social injustice and mass tourism have relevance today.
