Join award-winning author Katie Hale for an intensive masterclass for aspiring writers in the tranquil and inspiring setting of Higham Hall College. Katie is an internationally recognised novelist and poet living in the Lake District. Her debut novel My Name is Monster was published in 2019 and has since been translated into German and Italian and she won a Northern Debut Award for her first poetry collection, White Ghosts (2021). Designed to provide valuable critical support to those who might be at the start of their writing journey or always wanted to become a published writer, this 1-day workshop is organised in conjunction with the Lake District Book of the Year Award to help nurture creative talent in Cumbria. In this workshop, we will explore how to create complex and believable characters that drive the story. Looking at examples from both poetry and fiction, and including critical advice on how to avoid cliché, participants will develop characters who may not be likeable – but are always compelling, and who live on after the last page is turned.
