SUNDAY LECTURE: COMMON GROUND – THE HISTORY OF COMMON LAND
September 28th at 14:00 to 16:00

Over a million hectares of Britain have the status of common land: ‘half wild’ land over which no single individual has exclusive use rights. This talk will take a long view on the subject, charting how the use of common land has changed since the Middle Ages; how it has been claimed as communal space for purposes as diverse as trade, sport and illegal gatherings, and how the meaning of common land has changed, resulting in the multiple (and sometimes competing) values attached to it today.
