This talk will tell the story of the Victorian fern craze in the Lake District, from the Romantics’ early appreciation of the plant, through fern tourists, books, guides, and nurseries, to Kendal Mint Cake, and even Custard Cream biscuits. Dr Sarah Whittingham FSA is an independent historian, who has written books on architectural, garden, and social history, including Fern Fever: The Story of Pteridomania. She is currently researching the social and cultural history of bracken in Cumbria.
