SUNDAY LECTURE: TREES, FAIRIES AND ECOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES IN THE WORK OF BEATRIX POTTER
July 20th at 14:00 to 16:00

This talk will explore Beatrix Potter’s importance as an ecological writer, looking at how her work encourages early ecological awareness and what is now called ‘nature literacy’ in young readers. The talk will focus on the way in which Potter uses trees in her books in ways which develop an understanding of natural ecosystems, animal habitats, and seasonal change. It will also though look at the way in which Potter’s work draws on and responds to older cultural associations, which connect trees and woodland spaces to fairies and fairy magic.
