From wiry shining hemp to wire of all colours; from a chalky soft spun cotton to gleaming silks, muscular linens or sumptuous wools; even torn newspaper, plastic bags or worn-out clothing; there are so many potential weft materials, each with a unique personality. We’ll try weaving with various plant fibres, synthetics, animal hair and wool – spun tightly, softly or not at all – to see how each handles, how it is held by the warp, and how different woven surfaces can be produced. This is a course suitable for experienced weavers wishing to extend their usual practice and to manage wefts of all kinds, and for new weavers making their first discoveries.
