WOVEN TAPESTRY: SOUMAK

An incredibly versatile technique which can be used regardless of shed, for outlining, be added for decoration, to ‘draw’ onto the woven surface or to create art pieces using one or multiple weft threads and yarns. May be made in alternating directions, over variable numbers of warps, with single or multiple yarns, reversed, or woven throughout a piece, all of which will give different surface texture and rhythms. We will try out the variations on this technique and explore ways to include them in a design of your own.
