Jonathan studied Physics at Bristol University. During this period, his love of playing jazz and classical double bass developed  and, after completing his degree, he moved to Manchester to study at the Royal Northern College of Music under Rodney Slatford. Jonathan was a member of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for many years after which he freelanced with the North’s leading orchestras including the BBC Philharmonic, Hallé, Opera North and RLPO.  Between 2000 and 2020, he was also manager of the Northern Chamber Orchestra.  He particularly enjoys playing chamber music and regularly appears with Skipton Camerata, Welsh Chamber Orchestra and a newly-formed ‘South Lakes Baroque Orchestra’, who recently accompanied the Levens Choir in a series of Vivaldi concerts in Kendal and Lancaster. He has tutored on String Orchestra workshops directed by Louise Latham, Stephen Threlfall (Lake District Summer Music), Steve Wilkie and Robin McEwan (Sheffield).
