Jack Smith

Jack Smith is a ceramicist based in Brighton whose practice centres on wood firing. He builds and fires wood kilns, using flame, ash, and atmosphere to shape his work and highlight the exciting unpredictability of the process.

His work moves between functional and sculptural forms, often blurring the boundary between the two. Drawing from utilitarian pottery traditions and references to folklore, he explores how familiar forms can be stretched and reimagined through a palette of traditional ash glazes and shinos, chasing the subtle variation and depth that emerge from reduction firing and prolonged contact with flame.

Jack’s practice is rooted in the preservation of wood firing as a living craft. Through workshops and collaborative firings, he shares the technical knowledge and practical skills of kiln building and firing.
