SUMMARY:CREATIVE LEATHERWORKING FOR BOOKBINDERS
DESCRIPTION:Using natural (undyed) and tannery dyed leathers\, students will learn how to apply a wide range of decorative finishes and textures to a leather surface\, including:  craquele\, printed resist\, transfer print\, dyeing and colouring.  The completed leather samples will then be used to cover a millboard plaquette with lined doublure which can then be used to further work the leather surface using inlayed and onlayed decorative elements.  Although these techniques are of particular use to bookbinders they can also be applied to a wide range of related leather crafts.

DESCRIPTION:Most books deteriorate over time and so book conservators had to develop skills in restoring them.  On this course you will learn the basics of book repairs using a variety of cloths\, papers\, and adhesives. You will learn how to: deconstruct a book in a safe and systematic fashion\, repair both individual pages and sections\, prepare your book should it require resewing\, replace the end papers\, undertake various techniques of preparation to the cover in order to allow new material to be added. And so please bring with you 3-4 books in need of some TLC. The course is suitable for all levels of expertise. If you wanted to make a book from new I would be happy to help you with this too but please bring the paper with you for this.

SUMMARY:SCIENCE FICTION ON FILM TO 1970
DESCRIPTION:We will explore together the history of science fiction on film from the earliest days of cinema tricks to the dawn of the modern blockbuster. The essential question science fiction asks is ‘What would a world with different technology to the present day look like?’. Such speculative fictions overlap with a huge range of other genres\, and we will adopt an inclusive approach without getting too bogged down in monsters\, space\, or monsters in or from space. We will use clips and discussion to cover silent-era SF\, US SF in the ‘space race’ era\, and the 1960s discovery of ‘inner space’. There will be a nod to mad scientists and monsters along the way\, too! The course will also include viewings of three full length features drawn from the period between the beginning of the sound era and the first humans walking on the moon.

Suggest experiments with formats\, square\, small\, tall\, and wide. We discuss and experiment with colour balance issues to add mood and drama to for atmosphere.

SUMMARY:THE MAKING OF THE ENGLISH BIBLE
DESCRIPTION:In 1500 anyone found in possession of a bible in English risked being burned at the stake. But soon pioneers like Tyndale and Coverdale would begin to provide printed English Bibles and a reluctant Henry VIII was persuaded by Thomas Cromwell for a copy of the Bible to be placed in every parish church. Further changes followed in the reign of Elizabeth I until a new project was envisaged by James I and between 1604 and 1611 work went ahead on the production of the Authorised Version. Though it has become one of the glories of the English language its initial acceptance was\, at best\, lukewarm and Puritans were suspicious. But it became the Bible until more accurate translations began to appear in the late 19th and 20th centuries. This course will explore the tangled story of the emergence of the Bible in English.
