Volunteer

Volunteers play a vital part in the work we do at Higham, bringing a wealth of skills, knowledge and enthusiasm and providing their time with great generosity.

Taking part in our volunteer programme is a great way to get to know Higham, learn or develop skills, and meet new people.

Sometimes there are opportunities for people with specific skill sets to help us out with a particular task.

We particularly welcome volunteers interested in helping out with:

  • Driving the minibus. Drivers must be over 25 but under 70 and have held a driving licence for more than 2 years.
  • Gardening tasks. This work can be physically demanding; you will need to have a good level of fitness.
  • Painting, decorating and light DIY. If you are a tidy worker and able to handle a paintbrush, keeping Higham Hall’s interiors looking smart is an ongoing job.
  • Event facilitation. Can you provide extra support at open days, lectures or concerts? Anything from directing car parking to leading a tour of the house.

Above all we are looking for people who are:

  • interested in Higham Hall and what we do
  • warm and approachable, able to work both independently and with others
  • open to learning opportunities as well as sharing their skills & experiences with others

Our volunteer programme is aimed at people living locally to Higham in north and west Cumbria. Some people can give a few hours at seasonal events; some come every week. Occasionally we hold ‘Volunteer Weeks’ when we welcome volunteers from further afield to come and stay at Higham to help us out for a few days in return for bed and meals.

We ask new volunteers to make time for an induction (approx. 30 – 45 minutes). We encourage volunteers to attend briefings in advance of key events and may sometimes require volunteers to take part in essential training associated with the area of activity they will be involved in.

We are committed to providing a welcoming environment for everyone, regardless of gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, or religion or belief.
