During her long career as an illustrator, Clare Melinsky’s distinctive lino cut prints have appeared on everything from biscuit tins to book covers, from postage stamps to posters. Her most recognised piece of work is a set of the seven covers for the 2009 edition of the Harry Potter ‘Signature’ series. She has lived in the remote countryside in Dumfriesshire, with her partner, since graduating from Central School of Art in London [ now Central St Martins ]. Her agent in London, the Central Illustration Agency, keeps her well supplied with commissions. The woods, gardens and fields around her home near Thornhill in south-west Scotland inform much of her work. With an artist’s license, she can collect many elements from landscape and wildlife, and rearrange them in a single picture.
