Clare Smout (Drama & Literature)

May 13th at 08:00

Clare is a highly experienced tutor based in Ludlow. She specialises in Drama (especially the work of Shakespeare and his contemporaries) and Latin and Classical Culture. She has been teaching at Higham since 2017.

After graduating from Oxford University, Clare spent 20 years in professional theatre. She then moved into the academic world, where her theatrical experience constantly informs her teaching, research and publications. She most recently co-edited The History of Women on Stage. Clare’s university teaching includes 15 years at the University of Birmingham and over a decade as a freelance tutor for the Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education at Madingley Hall.

Clare describes her teaching approach as “essentially interactive”. Most of her sessions are a combination of informal lecturing, full group discussion and small group work. They generally include DVD clips of the plays being studied and occasionally involve students in reading short extracts.

Clare believes that the strength of Continuing Education courses comes from the opportunity for students to exchange ideas and debate interpretations, as much as from gaining insights from the tutor’s specialist knowledge and enthusiasms.
