MODERN ROMANCE: KURT SCHWITTERS IN THE LAKES
Wednesday February 19, 2025 at 18:30 to Friday February 21, 2025 at 13:30
Join our principal Dr Lizzie Fisher to revisit her recent research on the late work of Kurt Schwitters, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century who spent his final years in the Lake District. During this brief but intensely productive time, and despite terrible ill health, Schwitters made over 300 works, performed his ground-breaking sound poem ‘Ursonata’ to bemused audiences in an Ambleside pub and embarked on what he called his ‘life’s work’ in a barn in Langdale. Having started out with his roots in German Romanticism, he came full circle to the cradle of English Romanticism and left us a profoundly sensitive and nuanced meditation on the experience of exile, modernity and humanity’s relationship to nature.
