AN INTRODUCTION TO ZEN AND JAPANESE PHILOSOPHY

July 2nd at 18:30 to July 5th at 13:30

Japanese philosophy has historically been a fusion of both indigenous Shinto and continental religions such as Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. Having spent centuries in the orbit of both Chinese philosophy and Indian philosophy, modern Japanese thought draws on both of these cultural influences, resulting in a rich religio-philosophical worldview which underpins Japanese aesthetic concepts such as Wabi-Sabi and the practice of traditional arts such as calligraphy and poetry. Using lectures, literature, discussion and meditation, this course will explore the key philosophical tenets of Japanese culture before focusing on Zen as a philosophical and practical way of life.
