NATURE PRINTS
August 20th at 18:30 to August 22nd at 13:30

“When we observe nature, the guiding feature seems to be a kind of permission to exist, a capacity to co-exist amongst the countless forms of life” Gustav Metzger (1992) Nature prints were for centuries used to reproduce plants and build up study collections of flora and fauna; during the 19th century they were the precursor to photography. A slow walk in Higham’s garden gathering plant material will lead to the making of nature monoprints reflecting your own journey of discovery and exploration of nature. You will learn in playful ways to manipulate the surface of the natural things gathered to make several series of one-off nature prints. You will learn how to use a press printing directly and indirectly and how to work with the viscosity of printing inks. The ghost images and traces left on your plate will be worked on to create intricate and subtle prints. Post–production enhancements with inks produced from plants in the garden and some of your own watercolours will bring the work alive.
