Take advantage of the early sunsets of mid-winter to sketch the nocturnal scene from dusk to starry night at Higham Hall including natural and artificial light. Back in the studio we will develop these into painting studies that evoke a sense of nocturnal place and mood. We will look at great nocturnal painters like Whistler, Homer, Grimshaw, Munch and Hopper for inspiration copying their work to understand how they conveyed different moods through tone, colour, mark and composition. With demonstrations, group discussions and individual support throughout. This course is for students with moderate or greater experience of painting wanting to try something more challenging.
