An exploration of multiple styles of 20th century popular music, from the great American songbook, the emergence of jazz, blues and rock ‘n’ roll and onwards to pop music of the 1960’s, spearheaded by an examination of many of the songs of The Beatles. From there, the course will delve into the multiple genres of 70’s music, including the singer-songwriter movement, soul and reggae, and further still into the 1980’s, with the development of ‘synth-pop’ – much of this inspired by German electronic groups of the previous decade. A vital component of the course will be the contributions of those attending – students are invited to bring along examples of at least 5 songs / tracks which mean something to them to share with the group. The tutor will be happy to assist in this process if people are uncertain of how this will work.
