Martin Copley studied sculpture at Leeds College of Art and Central School, London after which he had 27 short term jobs in London. These included selling encyclopaedias and advertising space, labouring on building sites, peeling endless potatoes in kitchens, as a chainman on motorway construction, porter in Harrods, shop assistant in Selfridges and delivering furniture for a now defunct London store. His (and his wife’s) plans to emigrate to Italy came to a sharp halt by the arrival of their first child so he decided to qualify as a teacher.
After 30 years teaching art in secondary and special schools he eventually got to do what he had always wanted to do. That is to make sculptures about what goes on in our heads.
He has been a tutor at Higham for over 20 years. Several of his sculptures can be seen around the grounds and hall along with pieces created during his workshops. He is at present working (with fellow tutor Kay Latto) on a large sculpture that will stand near the pond. We hope to complete it during 2025.
