Toni is an internationally recognised illuminator, one of the few artists still using traditional manuscript gilding skills. She enjoys creating new work using hand prepared, natural materials. These include 24 carat gold leaf, mineral, earth and plant pigments, handmade inks, vellum and gemstones such as sapphires and emeralds. She is the author of Contemporary Illumination for the Calligrapher and Artist: Traditional Techniques Reinterpreted (2024).

Use skills passed down by medieval craftspeople to create small designs using 23 carat gold and pigments. No drawing experience is necessary. A selection of medieval and contemporary designs are available to trace, including illuminated letters, but creativity is welcomed. This an intermediate level course. Make perfect manuscript gesso using a traditional recipe, lay it smoothly and gild with loose leaf gold. This class is full of practical tips, helping you to achieve raised areas of gilding with a mirror shine. Those who are already able to make and lay gesso are welcome to work
