FULLY BOOKED: CHURCH AND SOCIETY IN VICTORIAN BRITAIN 1820 – 1901

January 26th at 18:30 to January 28th at 13:30

The 19th century was a turbulent one for the churches in Britain. In the
Church of England the emergence of an Anglo-Catholic group caused
huge debates – and some people were sent to prison. The Church of
Scotland experienced a break-away at the same time as Methodism
fractured. For Roman Catholics the long awaited emancipation came
and Catholic bishops could be appointed for the first time since the
Reformation. New groups such as the Salvation Army and Spiritualist
Church were created, and all the churches had to respond to the vast
social changes taking place in town and country.
